1. Overview

HanaAI is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app developed by the Diversity Tree Foundation, a non-profit organisation. This app is designed to support non-verbal individuals—primarily children—in communicating with their caregivers and environment.

We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially children. This policy explains what data the app uses, how it is handled, and your rights.

2. Data We Collect

HanaAI stores the following data entirely on your device—it never leaves your device unless explicitly described below:

• Communication profiles — names and settings for each user profile you create
• Vocabulary boards — categories, symbols, and custom words you add
• Custom images — photos you choose to add to symbols, stored locally
• App settings and preferences — voice selection, display preferences, language
• Your Anthropic API key — if you enter one to enable AI features, it is stored in your device's secure encrypted storage and is never transmitted to us

3. Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect any of the following:

• Names, email addresses, or any other identifying information
• Location data
• Usage analytics or crash reports
• Advertising identifiers
• Browsing or communication history
• Any information from children without parental consent

There are no user accounts, no sign-up, and no registration of any kind.

4. AI Features

HanaAI includes optional AI-assisted features (sentence suggestions, symbol search) powered by Anthropic Claude. These features are:

• Opt-in only — you must enter your own Anthropic API key to enable them
• Off by default — the app works fully without AI features

When AI features are active, the text you type or select may be sent to Anthropic's servers to generate a response. We do not receive or store this data. It is sent directly from your device to Anthropic.

Anthropic's privacy practices are governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy. We recommend reviewing it before enabling AI features.

Important for parents and caregivers: Do not include sensitive personal information (full names, addresses, medical details) in AI-assisted messages.

5. App Permissions

HanaAI may request the following device permissions:

• Microphone — for voice input (speech-to-text). Audio is processed by your device's built-in speech recognition. We do not record or store audio.
• Camera / Photo library — only if you choose to add a custom photo to a symbol. Images are stored locally on your device.
• Storage / Files — to import or export vocabulary backups that you initiate.

All permissions are used only for their stated purpose and are never used in the background.

6. Children's Privacy

HanaAI is designed for use by children under the supervision of a parent, caregiver, or therapist. We take children's privacy seriously:

• The app does not collect any personal information from children
• There is no in-app advertising
• There are no in-app purchases or links to external content
• No account creation is required at any age
• AI features, which involve external data transmission, require a parent or caregiver to set up an API key

This app is designed to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including its provisions for children's data.

If you believe a child's information has been inadvertently collected, please contact us immediately at the address below and we will take prompt action.

7. Third-Party Services

Anthropic Claude (optional)

Used for AI suggestions when you enable AI features with your own API key. See Section 4 above. Anthropic Privacy Policy

ARASAAC Pictograms

The app includes pictogram images from ARASAAC (Aragonese Portal of Augmentative and Alternative Communication). These images are bundled within the app and loaded locally — no data is sent to ARASAAC. Licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

Text-to-Speech

Voice output uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine (Apple Speech framework on iOS/macOS, Android TTS on Android). Text is processed on-device and is not sent to external servers.

8. Data Storage & Security

All app data is stored in a local SQLite database on your device using industry-standard practices. Your API key (if provided) is stored in your device's secure encrypted keystore.

Data is not backed up to our servers. If you use your device's built-in backup (iCloud, Google Backup), your app data may be included in that backup, which is governed by Apple's or Google's privacy policy respectively.

You can delete all app data at any time by uninstalling the app.

9. Your Rights

Because we do not collect or store personal data on our servers, most data rights (access, correction, deletion) can be exercised directly on your device by editing or deleting content within the app, or by uninstalling it.

EU/EEA residents have additional rights under GDPR. If you have any concerns about data that may have been transmitted to third-party services (e.g. Anthropic), please contact those services directly.
